Sermon: “The Patience of Job?”

Text: Job 38:1-11

Excerpt: “There is nothing worse than suffering unjustly, but it is really beyond understanding to suffer unjustly and alone. That is precisely what happened to Job. Throughout the many calamities that besiege Job, he remains constant in his faith in God. I am pretty sure that we can all identify with Job. If everything we have and everything we value is stripped from us, I am quite certain we would raise our fists to the heavens and ask why. Well, that’s exactly what Job does. He explodes in indignation and demands a hearing before God’s tribunal in heaven. After much silence on God’s part and empty explanations from the part of Job’s friends, he finally gets his wish to appear before God….”

Excerpt: “Is God good? And if God is good, is God good all the time? If God is good all the time, why do evil exist? Is God both, good and evil? This is the issue of theodicy. Through the ages people from all walks of life have struggled with the answers to these questions. It would be presumptuous of me to attempt to solve a discussion that has been going on for centuries. Instead, I will attempt to give you food for thought in hopes that we can continue the conversation….”
